Y-Ball & Jr. Stampede League Information

The 2008-09 Y-Ball season is now accepting registrations. Click here to visit the YMCA Y-Ball website for dates and registration information.

Y-Ball is a Recreational Basketball League for all boys & girls grades K-7. When a student enters 5th - 7th grade student, they have the opportunity to participate in either a competitive or recreational basketball league.  There is a distinctive difference between these two leagues:

Recreational League:  For youth who prefer a recreational league, the Yball (5th Grade) & Jr. Stampede (6th & 7th Grade) basketball leagues are a great opportunity for all youth to learn the game & develop their skills through an 8-week season.  Each season consists of 1 regular season game per week and a double elimination tournament at the end of the season. You may register for the recreational leagues online by clicking here or in person at your local YMCA. All those who register are placed on a team, which are organized by the school they currently attend.  Every player is guaranteed equal playing time, defensive rules and basket heights are modified for younger ages. The games are refereed by trained YMCA employees and teams are coached by trained volunteer parents.

Competitive League: The Treasure Valley AAU program is a competitive basketball league for those who seek to play basketball at the high school level.  All players are required to tryout for teams which are organized by high school feeder areas as Varsity or Jr. Varsity teams based on skill level.  There is no cost to tryout for an AAU team; those who do not make a team are encouraged to play in the Jr. Stampede or Y-Ball programs to increase their skill level. These teams play in an 8-week season which consists of 2 regular season games per week and a single elimination tournament at the end of the season. AAU follows slightly modified high school rules and uses 10-foot baskets.  While all players on the team are guaranteed to play in each game, individual play time is not equal & play time varies with each player.  Head coaches must be experienced & apply for the volunteer coaching position. Certified referees are sub-contracted to officiate the games.   More information about the AAU program can be found by clicking the AAU Details & Guidelines link.

Whichever league you choose to participate in, we hope your athlete develops a love for the game of basketball. Playing organized sports will not only teach coordination, teamwork and endurance, they also promote healthy lifestyle routines which last a lifetime.
